Overview

Comprising more than 37 000 hectares of diverse habitats, Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is home to over 50 different mammal species including all of the Big Five, and our 4-Day Welgevonden Safari is just the introduction you need!

Less than a 3-hour drive or 45-minute flight from Johannesburg, the reserve is the perfect place to unwind, relax in luxury, and explore the African bush. Welgevonden has one of the biggest populations of white rhino of any of Africa’s private reserves as well as leopard, giraffe, lion, elephant, cheetah, brown hyena, honey badger and around 300 bird species.

A safari in Welgevonden is the opportunity to put your feet up without having to worry about driving, meals or accommodation. Your only job is to keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife!

Accommodation

You will stay in very comfortable en-suite rooms in one of our luxury lodges. Most are secluded, accommodate a maximum of 10 guests and have been designed in harmony with the environment.

All Welgevonden’s lodges offer game drives, a range of activities, beautiful views and top-notch facilities and service including excellent food and wine.

Itinerary

At OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you will be met by a driver-guide who will transport you to your lodge around midday, allowing you to arrive before lunch, after which you will enjoy a late afternoon game drive through the reserve.

After enjoying some of Africa’s spectacular wildlife, you’ll return to the lodge to savour a tasty supper accompanied by your choice from the wine list.

Meals: Lunch and dinner included (excluding some beverages)

After a quick cup of coffee and something to snack on, you’ll set off on your dawn game drive. Leaving before the sun rises gives you the chance to spot animals starting or ending their waking hours.

After your morning drive, you return to a delicious breakfast or brunch, after which you’ll have time to nap, read, swim or even treat yourself to a massage.
After siesta or high tea it will be time for your afternoon drive, which often extends into the early evening, depending on the sightings you find. After this, return for dinner and time around the crackling fire.

Meals: Full board included (excluding some beverages)

On your final day, a morning game drive gives you one last chance to find the species that have been eluding you so far and soak up as much fresh air as you can. After the drive you will return to the lodge for your luggage before your transfer back to the airport in Johannesburg.

Meals: Breakfast included (excluding some beverages)

Notes

It is important to note that this is not a private safari and more than likely there will be other guests joining you on the game drive vehicles, air-conditioned mini bus transfer vehicles as well as during mealtimes. Guests arriving at OR Tambo Airport are advised to land by no later than 08h00 (domestic) or 07h00 (international) in order to have enough time to make the scheduled transfers within the game reserve to the respective lodge.

Each lodge has different policies for children in relation to accommodation and game drives, and are decided at the sole discretion of the manager or guide. Where possible, a kids’ safari will be arranged between normal safari times, and baby-sitting can be arranged at the lodge at an additional charge.

Guests flying out of OR Tambo Airport on the last day are reminded to not book any flights earlier than 17h00 (domestic) or 18h00 (international) in order to have enough time to get to the airport. We recommend that you rather stay over in Johannesburg if possible. Since we cannot guarantee the arrival time in Johannesburg on the last day – we will not be held responsible for re-imbursements of flight tickets should we arrive later than expected. Private transfers for guests with early flights can be arranged in advance at an extra charge.
