Overview

Consisting of 37 000 hectares of beautiful bush, Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is a sanctuary for more than 50 mammal species including all of the Big Five, and our 5-Day Welgevonden Safari is just the bush break you need!

A straightforward three-hour drive, or 45-minute flight from Johannesburg, Welgevonden is the ideal destination to switch off, be pampered, and experience all the African bush has to offer. It has one of the most significant populations of white rhino of any of Africa’s private reserves as well as spotted hyena, giraffe, leopard, lion, cheetah, brown hyena, honey badger, close to 300 bird species and myriad smaller creatures.

A safari in Welgevonden is the opportunity to completely unwind without thinking about transfers, meals and accommodation. Your only duty on your safari is to keep a lookout for the wildlife!

Accommodation

You stay in a luxurious en-suite room in one of the various lodges on offer. Most are tucked away, host a maximum of 10 people and have been built with attention to the surrounding landscape.

Welgevonden’s lodges offer morning and afternoon drives, a range of activities, gorgeous vistas, upscale facilities and excellent service including among the best food and wine that South Africa has to offer.

Itinerary

You will be met at OR Tambo International Airport by a representative who will drive you to your lodge around midday, allowing you to settle in before lunch, after which you will enjoy your first game drive in the reserve.

After unforgettable encounters with some of Africa’s most impressive wildlife, you’ll return to your lodge for a tasty dinner accompanied by a tipple from the wine list.

Meals: Lunch and dinner included (excluding some beverages)

After a steaming cup of coffee and something to nibble on, you’ll set off on your sunrise game drive around the reserve. Getting up early allows you to find some of the nocturnal species as well as other animals as they move to waterholes to drink.

You then return to the lodge for breakfast or brunch, after which you’ll have time to relax and use the lodge’s facilities or indulge in a rejuvenating spa treatment.
In the late afternoon it will be time for your afternoon game drive, which can extend into the evening, depending on what you see! Return to the lodge for dinner, a nightcap around the fire and a chance to admire the stars.

Meals: Full board included (excluding some beverages)

One last early morning wake-up call for your final morning game, which hopefully reveals any animals you haven’t been lucky enough to see yet. Then it’s back to the lodge to get your baggage and be driven back to Johannesburg.

Meals: Breakfast included (excluding some beverages)

Notes

It is important to note that this is not a private safari and more than likely there will be other guests joining you on the game drive vehicles, air-conditioned mini bus transfer vehicles as well as during mealtimes. Guests arriving at OR Tambo Airport are advised to land by no later than 08h00 (domestic) or 07h00 (international) in order to have enough time to make the scheduled transfers within the game reserve to the respective lodge.

Each lodge has different policies for children in relation to accommodation and game drives, and are decided at the sole discretion of the manager or guide. Where possible, a kids’ safari will be arranged between normal safari times, and baby-sitting can be arranged at the lodge at an additional charge.

Guests flying out of OR Tambo Airport on the last day are reminded to not book any flights earlier than 17h00 (domestic) or 18h00 (international) in order to have enough time to get to the airport. We recommend that you rather stay over in Johannesburg if possible. Since we cannot guarantee the arrival time in Johannesburg on the last day – we will not be held responsible for re-imbursements of flight tickets should we arrive later than expected. Private transfers for guests with early flights can be arranged in advance at an extra charge.
